ABOUT THE EVENT

It’s the ‘wheel deal’ with C.A.R.E.‘s new fundraiser, Pedal For Pets. The go-at-your-own-pace bicycle event will take place the morning of Sunday, August 18, starting from the C.A.R.E. Adoption Center, 4927 Main St., Skokie. In a move to appeal to both seasoned riders and families, Pedal For Pets will feature two routes: a 25-mile course launching at 8:30 am; and a two-mile course launching at 10:30 am.

“Creating a ride for C.A.R.E. brings together my two favorite causes – bike riding and pet rescue,” says Pedal For Pets organizer Julie Keating, co-owner of Amlings Cycle, Niles, Ill., and past chair of the North Shore Century ride hosted by the Evanston Bicycle Club.

Co-organizer Niki Bartosiak agrees. “I wanted to help C.A.R.E. create a new fundraiser to support its work in animal rescue,” says Bartosiak, who has more than 20 years experience organizing charity bike rides. “That C.A.R.E., all-volunteer organization, could open its own facility, tells me it’s an amazing group—one that I want to be part of.”

Pedal For Pets supporters include “Cool Cat” sponsors Amlings Cycle, Niles; North Shore Community Bank, Skokie; and “Fur Baby” Sponsor Carriage Hill Kennels, Glenview. Attendees can check out vendor booths, snacks and activities at the starting point. Pedal For Pet riders can also tour the C.A.R.E. Adoption Center to meet a few of its furry residents before and after the ride.

TWO ROUTES

The Pedal For Pets 25-mile Big Dog Route will go from the C.A.R.E. Adoption Center into Niles, passing at times through the Cook County Forest Preserve. Big Dog riders will then head north toward Lake Glenview and a SAG stop before arriving back to the starting point. Smart phone users can download the Pedal For Pets app for directions.

The two-mile Emily Oaks Route will start at 10:30, taking riders along the Skokie Valley Trail to the turnaround point at Emily Oaks Nature Center. At Emily Oaks, riders will have a chance to briefly explore the Nature Center in order to enter a drawing upon return to the Adoption Center.

NOTE: Pedal For Pets is a non-competitive ride for people on bicycles. Due to safety issues, no walkers, joggers, or dogs will be permitted at this event. Please note that the Village of Skokie requires all participants to wear helmets.
